The WiSo Faculty is pleased to welcome a new member. Since 1 March 2022, Ziyue Li holds the position of Junior Professor for Machine Learning in Smart Markets. On behalf of the entire faculty, Dean Ulrich Thonemann welcomed Jun. Prof. Ziyue Li personally to the Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences of the University of Cologne.

Prof. Li most recently worked at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), where he also earned his PhD in Industrial Engineering and Decision Analytics. His research interests focus on high-dimensional data mining, machine learning, and deep learning methodologies for real-world problems. These include but not limit to tensor, spatiotemporal data, interpretable machine learning, knowledge graphs, topic models, transfer learning, and self-supervised learning. His most recent research lies in the fields of self-supervised learning and reinforcement learning, leveraging deep learning models to various disciplines, such as energy, intelligent transport, smart manufacturing, and multimedia. Ziyue Li also maintains active collaborations with international academia and industries.

As a junior professor for Machine Learning in Smart Markets, Ziyue Li is also based as Chief Machine Learning Scientist at the Institute of Energy Economics at the University of Cologne (EWI), Affiliated Institute of the WiSo faculty. Professor Li will also be able to benefit from the close cooperation of the researchers in the faculty's Key Research Initiative (KRI) "Sustainable smart Energy and Mobility".

His expertise in data science and machine learning is shown not least by his success in the HKUST Three Minute Thesis Competition (2021 - 2nd place), awards of the "Best Theoretical Paper" (Runner-up)  and “Best Applied Paper” (Finalist) at the INFORMS 2021 Data Mining and Decision Analytics Workshop, awards of the “Best Student Paper” (Finalist) at INFORMS 2020 Data Mining Section, as well as the winner of the “Best Conference Paper Award” at 2020 IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE). Among other awards, last but not least, the Hong Kong Ph. D. Fellowship Scholarship Award (2017-2020) demonstrates Ziyue Li's outstanding qualities in academic achievement and communication skills.

We are pleased to have gained a dedicated and renowned researcher in Ziyue Li and wish him all the best for his future work at the WiSo Faculty.
