For its university ranking, the WirtschaftsWoche works with the consultancy Universum and surveys the HR departments of German companies to find out which university they consider the best. The survey asks the following question: The graduates from which university are best suited to your needs as an employer? The companies surveyed can choose from a list of universities and select the ones whose graduates fulfil their expectations the most. Companies can select multiple universities per subject. Owing to its practical focus, the ranking concentrates on economics-related subjects such as business administration, mechanical engineering, computer science and law.

According to a recent WirtschaftsWoche ranking, the University of Cologne is one of the most research-intensive German-speaking universities in business administration.
