New funding criteria for the publication fund at UoC
In December 2025, the Rectorate decided to adjust the financing model for the publication fund.
From 2026 onwards, in addition to the central administration/UCL and the deaneries, the authors themselves will also contribute to the publication costs. A limit on the maximum additional payments by the publishers will ensure that their budget is not unreasonably affected.
The adjustments to the publication fund's financing model are intended to ensure that the costs can be sustainably borne and to enable the UoC to apply for funding from the DFG's ‘Open Access Publication Costs’ programme.

A festive celebration in honour of the WiSo Library
On 13 November 2025, the founding ceremony of the WiSo Library took place at the Student Service Centre.
The University of Cologne's first faculty library had already opened its doors in October 2024. As part of the WiSo Library and Campus Service, it offers all members of the WiSo faculty a central point of contact with a wide range of services.
Twenty-three individual libraries have grown together to form an innovative library concept – a worthy cause for celebration!
New Highlights in the WiSo Library: „BOOKS TO GO“ and more
In addition to the NAP, the WiSo Library now offers new, modern seating in the entrance area, inviting visitors to relax and recharge. An innovative greenery concept further enhances the welcoming atmosphere, making the space even more pleasant.
Another recent addition is the “BOOKS TO GO” shelf – a book exchange where everyone is welcome to take, share, or donate books free of charge, easily and anonymously. This initiative, surrounded by fresh greenery, encourages the sharing of resources, sustainability, and social engagement, making it environmentally friendly and fair.
It is a wonderful way to promote reading, the joy of books, and the mindful use of resources – all while turning the library from a pure learning space into a place where users feel truly at ease.
