Questions during the Bachelor's programme
You are already studying for a Bachelor's degree at the WiSo Faculty and have questions about your studies? Then you will find the answers to the most common, general questions here. If you have individual problems or cannot find the answer to your question here, you are of course welcome to contact the WiSo Student Service Point.
All about examinations
1. How do I register for exams as a WiSo student and what are the deadlines?
You can register for examinations - as well as for courses - via KLIPS 2.0 by logging into KLIPS 2.0 with your Smail account and then using the "My degree programme" function. After clicking on your degree programme, your degree programme tree will open. Select the module in which you would like to take the examination and click on the corresponding module or course examination. Then click on the "P". A pop-up window opens in which alternative examination dates are also displayed if necessary. For each examination date, you can see until when you can register or deregister. This may vary depending on the exam date. You can then finalise your registration there.
2. How do I register for examinations at the WiSo Faculty if I am studying at another faculty?
Registration for examinations at the WiSo Faculty is always done online via KLIPS 2.0. Please note the examination registration and deregistration deadlines. As these are cut-off deadlines, it is generally not possible to register or deregister at a later date. If a second examination date is offered, this is an alternative examination date and not a repeat examination. The chairs are therefore not obliged to publish the results of the first date in good time in order to be able to register for the second, alternative date.
3. How do I register for examinations in Studium Integrale at the WiSo Faculty as a student of another faculty?
Information on enrolling for WiSo courses in Studium Integrale can be found on this homepage.
Students from other faculties register for the examinations of the WiSo courses that are open in Studium Integrale directly in KLIPS 2.0.
4. How often may I retake an exam if I have failed?
If you fail an exam, e.g. because you did not pass it or because you were required to register and did not show up, you will be given one failed attempt (grade 5,0).
You have a total of three examination attempts for each module. If you fail a module again on the third attempt, the WiSo Examination Office will inform you in writing that, according to the examination regulations, you are entitled to three further, additional examination attempts. Further details can be found in the examination regulations of the respective degree programme. If you have already failed the second examination attempt of a module, it is recommended that you visit the WiSo Student Service Point. The staff will advise you on your individual situation and show you possible solutions.
5. If I fail an exam, do I have to retake that particular exam?
Whether you are allowed to change a module again after failing an examination depends largely on whether you are definitively committed to the module in question (even if it is not a compulsory module in your degree programme). The examination regulations explain in more detail when and in which area of your degree programme you are restricted to a module or even a group (e.g. in the supplementary area for elective options). The WiSo Examination Office has also broken this down clearly for each degree programme on its homepage. If you have any questions, please contact the WiSo Student Service Point.
6. What do I need to know to write my Bachelor's thesis?
You may register to write your Bachelor's thesis if you have successfully completed at least 100 ECTS. The processing time begins with the issue of the topic and is 12 weeks for all WiSo Bachelor's degree programmes. The examination regulations of each degree programme regulate in which area of your degree programme your thesis is to be written.
Please note that Bachelor's theses at the chairs of Business Administration, Information Systems and at the chairs of Prof Fuchs and Prof Hölzl are assigned centrally via KLIPS 2.0. The application and also the distribution of preferences takes place in the first KLIPS allocation phase. Further information can be found here.
If you would like to write your thesis at the CMR (Centre for Macroeconomic Research), there is also a central allocation of Bachelor's theses in Economics. Please note the separate application deadlines and regulations listed here.
In all other departments, you can contact the chair directly via the respective office hours and discuss the topic and completion period bilaterally. In all cases, registration takes place together with the chair at the WiSo Examination Office, which provides a clear overview of the procedure on its homepage.
7. Can I write my bachelor's thesis in a company?
It is generally possible to write your Bachelor's thesis in cooperation with a company. Please obtain the relevant information from the chairs.
If your responsible supervisor at a chair is in favour of cooperation with a company and the company you favour is also in favour, there should be nothing to prevent this. However, it is important that your first examiner is a chair at the WiSo Faculty and not the company, so you should first visit the office hours of your favoured chair and clarify this with them. In addition, the allocation of chairs and topics in Business Administration as well as the chairs of Prof Fuchs and Prof Hölzl takes place via the 1st registration phase in KLIPS 2.0. You should therefore contact the chair beforehand and clarify the options before applying to various chairs.
Please note, however, that writing a Bachelor's thesis in cooperation with a company is very time-consuming and is therefore generally more suitable for writing a Master's thesis.
8. What is the difference between Bachelor's grade, average grade and Transcript of Records?
The Transcript of Records can be created via KLIPS 2.0 as a simple account statement or requested as an official version (with seal) from the WiSo Examination Office online via the WiSoApp portal. You can also have the document issued at the reception desk of the WiSo Student Service Point.
The Transcript of Records contains both a provisional average grade, which is calculated on the basis of the examinations passed so far, and the current number of ECTS credits achieved so far. This document therefore also represents an 80% certificate for a Master's application, for example.
As soon as all grades have been entered in KLIPS and the Bachelor's degree programme has been successfully completed, the transcript of records also shows the Bachelor's grade, which is calculated based on the ECTS and area weighting. In addition, the WiSo Examination Office and the WiSo Student Service Point also issue positive transcripts of records on request - e.g. for applications - which do not list any failed attempts.
Specialisations and choices
1. What should I bear in mind when choosing my group of specialisation and can I change them?
The specialisations you choose during your studies represent your specialisation. Please refer to your respective examination regulations for details, e.g. whether there are any restrictions on the choice of specialisations. For example, in the Business Administration degree programme, you must choose a specialisation from Business Administration; the same applies to the Bachelor's degree in Economics. In the Social Science degree programme, for example, you must choose between a specialisation in politics or sociology and social psychology.
If you have decided on a specialisation area and are considering changing it, you will also find the regulations on changing modalities described in your examination regulations. However, we also recommend the overview page of the WiSo Examination Office, which lists these again by degree programme.
The student advisors at the WiSo Student Service Point will be happy to help you with any uncertainties and questions you may have, e.g. if you have any questions about the compatibility of certain specialisations and clear career ideas.
2. Can I change my supplementary section?
If you have decided on a supplementary section and are considering changing it, you will also find the regulations on changing modalities described in your examination regulations. However, we also recommend the overview page of the WiSo Examination Office, which lists these again by degree programme.
The student advisors at the WiSo Student Service Point will be happy to help you with any uncertainties or questions.
3. Which courses can I take in the Studium Integrale and what do I need to bear in mind?
In principle, you can take any module in Studium Integrale that is listed in this area in your degree programme tree in KLIPS 2.0 and is activated for enrolment. Please note, however, that WiSo modules that are also taught as regular modules in another WiSo Bachelor's degree programme are not activated for enrolment. WiSo IT courses, on the other hand, are only open to students of the WiSo faculty. The modules in the Studium Integrale programme are also taken via KLIPS 2.0. In total, you must complete at least 12 ECTS in the Studium Integrale programme. Practical activities can also be taken into account. You can read more about this here.
4. Are additional courses possible in the Bachelor's programme?
It is not intended or possible to complete additional courses as part of a Bachelor's degree programme at the WiSo Faculty of the University of Cologne. Please understand that no exceptions to this rule are possible for capacity reasons. An exception is the Studium Integrale programme. Here you can complete more than the 12 ECTS credits provided for, which will also be listed on your transcript of records.
Semester abroad and internships
1. When do I have to apply for a semester abroad?
On the one hand, you have the opportunity to go abroad to a partner university via the Centre for International Relations (ZIB) of the WiSo Faculty. Information on deadlines (usually 15 January for the following winter and summer semesters), the application procedure and the partner universities can be found on the ZIB homepage. It is essential to obtain information in good time, as planning and, if necessary, obtaining the necessary language certificates takes some time. You should therefore start looking for information about a year before your planned stay abroad.
The International Office also maintains partnerships with universities abroad, where you can apply across faculties.
It is also possible to go abroad as a freemover. You can also find more information about this on the ZIB homepage. However, you will then have to organise your stay abroad yourself.
2. Which courses can I take abroad and have transferred here?
Bachelor's students can generally receive credit for examinations taken at foreign universities in the Studium Integrale, in the credit transfer modules specially set up for this purpose (focus areas and supplementary sections - depending on the degree programme). You also have the option of carrying out a preliminary check at the WiSo Credit Transfer Centre before the start of your semester abroad if it is an individual course credit transfer. Further information can be found on the homepage of the WiSo Credit Transfer Centre.
3. Should I do an internship and can it be credited to my degree programme?
The faculty generally recommends practical work experience to supplement your studies, e.g. during the lecture-free period. However, this is not anchored in your examination regulations, so that it is not a compulsory internship, but a voluntary service that contributes to your personal development and often provides orientation in the context of further study planning.
If your potential internship provider requires a certificate confirming that the WiSo Faculty recommends taking up an internship, you are welcome to contact the WiSo Student Service Point. We will then issue you with a certificate of eligibility, which can also be customised on request. Please bring a certificate of enrolment with you, which you can print out in KLIPS 2.0. If further individual details are to be included, a simple copy of a document (e.g. contract or confirmation from the company) must also be submitted. You are also welcome to submit this to us via our contact form.
If you need help with preparing your application documents or advice on career orientation, you are welcome to drop by the student advisors' consultation hours on the subject of careers and internships. We also offer many event formats where you can make initial contacts with employers and companies.
Students also have the opportunity to have specialist internships recognised as part of the Studium Integrale with a maximum of 12 ECTS. The homepage of the WiSo Examination Office provides information on this.
