In addition to applying for the first semester, which of course also serves as an option for you to change to one of our master's programmes, there is also the possibility of applying for an advanced semester.
In the application procedure for an advanced semester, places are allocated which are or will be free. Our master's programmes only start in the winter semester. Consequently, applications for an advanced second or fourth semester can only be made in the summer semester and for an advanced, third semester only in the winter semester.
Requirements:
- Free places in the respective master's programme and the corresponding semester and
- The admission criteria for a master's application for the first semester are fulfilled:
minimum grade, language certificate(s) and subject-related admission criteria.
Important notes:
Unfortunately, it is not possible to apply for an advanced semester for the master's programme International Management (CEMS MIM) and the Double Master's Programmes.
As the probability for an admission to an advanced semester is very low, we recommend applying for the first semester. Credits already passed from your current master's programme can be recognized if equivalence is assumed. The verification of this will only take place after enrolment.
Lateral entry & Change of location
When applying for a higher semester, a distinction is made between lateral entry and change of location:
Lateral entry | Change of location |
Applicants who are not registered in another university in this particular programme up the time of application or have not been registered before the time of application but can confirm until a certain deadline, chosen by the University of Cologne, that their examinations taken elsewhere can be accredited in a sufficient extend. The subject of study and, if applicable, the place of study change. | Applicants who are registered in another university in this particular programme at the time of application or have been registered before the time of application. The subject of study remains the same and must be exactly the same. |

Application procedure
- Submit all application documents as PDF files via e-mail to the Admissions Committee.
- We conduct a formal and a subject-related review of your application:
- Formal review: Are all documents complete and in the correct form? Is the minimum grade achieved? Are the language criteria fulfilled?
- Subject-related review: Are the subject-related admission criteria fulfilled?
- If your application is correct in terms of form and subject, a subject semester classification ("Fachsemestereinstufung") is made. You will receive feedback from us by e-mail. Please note that the processing time is between six and eight weeks, which is why we recommend submitting the documents as early as possible.
- Recognition is only granted to the extent that the Faculty of Management, Economic and Social Sciences still requires a certain amount of examination work in order to be awarded the degree. In particular, the recognition of the master's thesis is not possible.
- Only achievements that do not show any significant difference can be recognized. Contents, structures and competences of master's programmes differ from university to university. Therefore, it is not guaranteed that all achievements will be recognized. A non-binding preliminary eligibility check cannot be made.
- At the time of application, recognizable courses have already been successfully completed and are listed as passed on the transcript of records
- For an application/classification to the 2nd semester, at least 15 ECTS of the respective master's programme must be recognized
- For an application/classification to the 3rd semester, at least 45 ECTS of the respective master's programme must be recognized
- For an application/classification to the 4th semester, at least 75 ECTS of the respective master's programme must be recognized
- You receive your Fachsemestereinstufung via e-mail.
- You create your official application via KLIPS and upload your Fachsemestereinstufung in PDF format by March 15 or September 15.
