Do fake news harm the economy? New episode of the ECONtribute Wirtschaftspodcast

Do fake news not only endanger democracy, but also harm the economy? Can this even be measured? And how much is the protection against misinformation worth to people?

ECONtribute member Stefanie Huber conducts research at the University of Bonn on financial markets and the gender gap in leadership positions. In various studies, she has analyzed the economic impact of fake news. We discuss why many people overestimate their fact-checking skills, how the effect of fake news on productivity and unemployment can be measured, and whether people are willing to pay for protection against misinformation.

This episode is about (false) facts, uncertainty, and overconfidence.

New SALON series of the Cologne International Forum

Dear all,

The SALON series of the Cologne International Forum is kicking off a new event series in the summer semester 2025 – and we kindly invite you to be part of it!

At our first SALON evening on the 29th April, we will address the pressing question of Syria's future. Anan Alsheikh Haidar, a legal scholar from the University of Cologne, will present her view on Syria’s current situation and engage in a discussion with journalist Isabel Schayani, and international law professor Claus Kreß on how Syria’s new interim regime can tackle key challenges – from security issues and economic stabilization to handling previous human rights violations.

This event is organized in collaboration with the Cologne Center for Advanced Studies in International History and Law (CHL) and the Institute for International Peace and Law.

Further SALON events will focus on the battle of bacteria in the petri dish, remarkable studies on ants, the impact of global development on European unity, and Elif Shafak’s perspective on the connection between gender and migration. Together we will gain insight, deepen our understanding and discuss our thoughts.

Participation is free of charge and open to all interested parties. The events are held in English and take place at the International House (Kringsweg 6). For more information, the full program, and registration details, please visit our website: https://cif.uni-koeln.de/events/salon.
