We are pleased to welcome Dr Raoul van Maarseveen as Junior Professor at the Chair of Applied Economics since September 01, 2023! On behalf of the entire WiSo faculty, Prof. Dr Marita Jacob, Vice Dean of Academic Career, congratulated Jun. Prof. Dr Raoul van Maarseveen.

Raoul van Marseveen’s research interests lie at the intersection of urban and labour economics, with a special focus on spatial equality. In this sense, he continues a long tradition of the WiSo Faculty, which manifests itself in some renowned names in these fields. We are convinced that he will be able to join this tradition and make his mark, not least in international terms.

Jun. Prof. Dr Raoul van Maarseveen obtained his PhD from the Department of Economics at Uppsala University in Sweden. His dissertation is entitled "Urbanization and Education: The Effect of Childhood Urban Residency on Educational Attainment." Previously, he also pursued an internationally oriented educational path. For instance, he was a Visiting Graduate Student at the London School of Economics in 2022 and a Visiting Graduate Student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2019-2020.

As a researcher, he has worked for the Uppsala Urban Lab, the Uppsala Center for Fiscal Studies, the Uppsala Center for Labor Studies, and the CPB Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy. In addition, he has been a board member of the Economics PhD Association and the Uppsala Economics Association. He has received various awards in recognition of his research, including the "IPUMS International Award for Best Student Paper", an "honorable mention" for the "Urban Economics Association Prize" for the best student paper, and an invitation to the prestigious EALE Job Market tour. Not only his educational background is characterized by an international orientation, but also his work. Thus, he has attended conferences and given seminar presentations in Amsterdam, Nuremberg, Milan, Stockholm, London, Lisbon, Padua, Helsinki, Minneapolis and Philadelphia.

With Raoul van Maarseveen, the WiSo faculty gains an outstanding urban and labour economist, highly visible already at a young age. We are very pleased to welcome Jun. Prof. Dr Raoul van Maarseveen to the WiSo and wish him all the best for his start.
