The best young researchers come from Cologne. This has been confirmed once again by the current Economics Ranking recently published in "Wirtschaftswoche". In the category "Researchers under 40 (overall research performance)", four WiSo academics were ranked, more than at any other German university.
Top young researchers in economics
Prof Dr Christopher Roth, Professor of Economics and Management at the Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences of the University of Cologne and member of the Cluster of Excellence ECONtribute Markets and Public Policy (joint Cluster of Excellence of the Universities of Cologne and Bonn), achieved an outstanding result. According to the ranking, the WiSo economist is the best young researcher at a German-speaking university. In international comparison, Professor Roth achieved a respectable 5th place. In addition, Prof Dr Dominik Wied came 20th, Prof Dr Christoph Schottmüller 25th and Professor Anna Bindler 67th.
"Current Research Achievement"
Professor Roth was also able to establish himself in the "Current Research Achievement" category, not least for his work on opinion-forming and political engagement. Ranked 7th worldwide, he came third in the DACH region (Germany, Austria, Switzerland), after David B. Audretsch (Indiana University and University of Klagenfurt) and Iftekhar Hasan (Fordham University and IWH Halle).
In the same category, which is based on scientific publications in more than 1,800 international journals over the past five years, other WiSo academics also achieved notable rankings. Prof. Dr Matthias Sutter came 27th and Prof. Dr Patrick Schmitz, Professor of Economic Political Science at the WiSo Faculty, achieved an outstanding 88th place. Prof. Dr Axel Ockenfels rounded off the WiSo success with a 92nd place.
"Lifetime achievement (overall research performance)"
Matthias Sutter, Patrick Schmitz and Axel Ockenfels were also honoured in the third category "Lifetime achievement (overall research performance)", with Professor Sutter in 36th place, Patrick Schmitz in 44th place and Axel Ockenfels in 95th place. Professor Dr Jörg Breitung (162nd place) and Professor Dr Felix Bierbrauer in 204th place also excelled in this category.
For some time now, the WiSo Faculty has consistently achieved high positions in national and international rankings, not least in the area of researcher rankings. In the Economics ranking, which is carried out every two years, the WiSo Faculty improved by two places in the DACH region and by one place in Germany compared to the results of 2021. Seventh place and fourth place remain an incentive for us.
The good ranking results underline the outstanding quality of research and teaching at WiSo, which is not least due to the unique approach of interdisciplinary integration of economics, social and political sciences. This is manifested not least in the Key Research Initiatives, which provide a platform for joint research between the chairs and institutes of the WiSo Faculty.
We want to offer our academics ideal conditions and support them in internationally oriented top-level research in a fruitful research climate characterised by interdisciplinary networking. In this respect, we see ourselves confirmed by the results of the economics ranking and warmly congratulate our colleagues.
