The WiSo Faculty remains at the top: The Cologne Institute for Information Systems (CIIS) of the WiSo Faculty of the University of Cologne secures first place in Germany in the latest ranking of Information Systems research by the renowned Association for Information Systems (AIS). Across Europe, CIIS is also among the leading institutions in the AIS Research Ranking, sharing fourth place with Erasmus University Rotterdam. Globally, the institute ranks 46th and is thus among the top 50 most prestigious research institutions in the field of Information Systems.

AIS is the leading professional association for individuals and organisations engaged in research, teaching, practice, and study within the field of Information Systems. The current ranking is based on the number of academic publications in the leading journals for Information Systems from 2020 to 2024, as summarised in the AIS Senior Scholars’ List of Premier Journals. The ranking is determined by the research performance of individual professors.

Since its founding, the Cologne Institute for Information Systems (CIIS) at the Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences has been among the top-rated research institutions worldwide in the field of Information Systems. Under the leadership of Professors Peter Gloor, Wolf Ketter, Christoph Rosenkranz, Detlef Schoder, Stefan Seidel, and Markus Weinmann, it brings together research teams from the departments of Information Management, Integrated Information Systems, Information Systems for Sustainable Society, Systems Engineering, and Business Analytics. The research focuses on topics such as Artificial Intelligence, Digital Transformation, Digital Innovation, and Sustainability. The research findings are applied across various sectors, including energy, mobility, financial and crypto markets, healthcare, and logistics.

Students also benefit from the interdisciplinary approach. CIIS offers them a broad range of courses. For instance, the Master’s programme "Information Systems" follows an interdisciplinary approach with three focus areas: Business Analytics and Data Science, Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and Digital Sustainable Society. This offering is complemented by the Master’s programme "Business Analytics & Econometrics," which provides a unique combination of traditional analytics (e.g., statistics, econometrics, optimisation, simulation) and modern analytical methods (e.g., machine learning and artificial intelligence).

The practical application of theoretical concepts to business, management, and entrepreneurship forms a central component of both degree programmes. Studying at CIIS not only provides students with sound theoretical and practical knowledge to tackle current economic and societal challenges but also offers them excellent career prospects.
