The Sparkasse KölnBonn is supporting the establishment of an endowed assistant professorship (junior professorhip) in banking at the Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences of the University of Cologne. The aim is to promote education and research in finance and to enhance Cologne's appeal as a hub for education and science. To this end, Sparkasse KölnBonn is providing annual funding of €150,000 over a maximum period of seven years, amounting to a total of approximately €1 million.
These funds will allow the University of Cologne to cover the personnel costs of the W1 professorship, as well as initial equipment, ongoing material expenses, and research costs. Additionally, a part-time doctoral position will be created to support research and teaching. Initially, the professorship will be limited to three years. Subject to positive interim evaluations, the position may be extended to a maximum of seven years.
" The endowment of this professorship by Sparkasse KölnBonn is a significant contribution to strengthening Cologne as a region of education and research. It underscores our shared commitment to promoting excellence in research and teaching in our region. We thank Sparkasse KölnBonn for their dedication and look forward to the impact this professorship will have on science, the economy, and society," said Professor Ulrich Thonemann, PhD, Dean of the Faculty of Management, Economics, and Social Sciences of the University of Cologne.
Bridging the Gap Between Research and Practice
The endowed assistant professorship in banking has already been advertised on the university's recruitment portal. The position specifically seeks an individual with a strong interest in sustainability, artificial intelligence, and regulation.
"In these disruptive times, when economic transformation, regulatory developments, and advancements in AI are progressing rapidly, a close connection between business and academia is more important than ever. We are pleased to establish a bridge between research and practice through this partnership, aiming to generate new insights into critical future issues in the banking sector," said Dr Andreas Dartsch, Member of the Board of Sparkasse KölnBonn. Furthermore, in light of the current shortage of skilled workers, the training of young talent plays a central role.
The position is set to commence in October 2025. The deadline for applications is 31 January 2025. Details of the vacancy can be found on the University of Cologne's job portal, where applications can also be submitted.
