The University of Cologne has achieved top positions in this year's Academic Ranking of World Universities ("Shanghai Ranking") once again.
This year, the department of Sociology with the Institute for Sociology and Social Psychology of the WiSo Faculty (ISS) stands out in particular, which is now one of the top 50 leading sociology departments worldwide. The Faculty of Sociology is still the leader in Germany and was able to improve its international ranking from 51-75th to 43rd place.
In addition, the Department of Economics at the University of Cologne this year, like those of the Universities of Berlin (Humboldt), Göttingen and Frankfurt (Goethe), is in fourth place nationally and from 101-150 internationally.
The Department of Management of the University of Cologne shares third place with RWTH Aachen, Frankfurt School of Finance, TU Darmstadt and the University of Mannheim (201-300th place in the international ranking). The Department of Finance occupies 5-6th place in the national ranking together with the University of Munich (LMU) and 151-200th in the international ranking. In the field of Business Administration, the University of Cologne occupies 4th place nationally together with the University of Bochum and 151-200th place internationally.
ARWU uses six indicators to rank world universities, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, number of highly cited researchers selected by Thomson Reuters, number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science, number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index - Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index, and per capita performance of a university. More than 1200 universities are actually ranked by ARWU every year and the best 500 are published.
