The "QS World University Ranking by Subject" evaluates universities worldwide in 51 disciplines. These disciplines are grouped into five broad subject areas: Arts and Humanities, Technology and Engineering, Life sciences and Medicine, Natural sciences, and Social sciences and Management. In these disciplines, the universities are rated according to academic reputation, employer reputation, research citations per paper and the H-index.
The H-index has been used in this ranking since 2013. It is based on the amount of most cited works by scientists and the number of citations they have received in other publications. In this way, both the productivity and the influence of the published work can be measured.
In the 2021 ranking, the University of Cologne was able to take 9th place in the field of Social Sciences and Management. With this excellent ranking, the WiSo is once again one of the TOP 10 faculties for studying social sciences and economics in Germany.
