Celebrating 20 years of collaboration between MIT and CIIS

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the long-standing partnership between MIT, namely Prof. Dr. Peter Gloor, who was for over two decades a researcher at the MIT Sloan School of Management, and the Cologne Institute for Information Systems (CIIS), namely Prof. Dr. Detlef Schoder, Chair of Information Systems and Information Management at the University of Cologne. Both institutions are among the world leaders in management and information systems research.

A legacy of global exchange: Over the past two decades, this collaboration has fostered a dynamic exchange of knowledge, research and academic talent that has brought together students, doctoral candidates and faculty from both institutions. Among the highlights are certainly the extended research visits of doctoral students and faculty to both institutions, which strengthen the relationship.

Joint Research Projects: The partnership has been a catalyst for numerous collaborative projects across cutting-edge areas of technology and social science, including: Social Network Analysis (investigating the dynamics of social connections and their impact on individuals and organizations), Collective Intelligence (exploring how groups can outperform individuals in decision-making and problem-solving), Social Media Analytics (analyzing online platforms to understand trends, behaviors, and influence), Fake News Detection (developing tools and methodologies to combat misinformation in the digital age) and Social Networks and Performance (studying how networks affect organizational and individual performance).

Publications and Conferences: This collaboration has led to a wealth of academic output, including a range of books, peer-reviewed journal articles in leading academic outlets including Management Science, HBR, Journal of Strategic Information Systems, and papers presented at leading international conferences. A particular highlight has been the ongoing "COINS" conference series initiated by Peter Gloor, which serves as a platform for discussing the latest advances in collective intelligence, networks, and systems (the next one will take place May 2025 in northern Italy).

Looking Ahead: As this partnership celebrates its 20th anniversary, both scholars – Peter Gloor/MIT and Prof. Schoder/CIIS are committed to continuing their shared mission of advancing knowledge and fostering innovation. We are particularly grateful to have Peter Gloor as a Honorary Professor at the University of Cologne, where he will continue to conduct seminars on Collective Intelligence, Creativity, and Corporate Performance.
