New episode of the ECOntribute Wirtschaftspodcasts
Could Brexit have been avoided? How was it possible for the EU referendum to take place in the first place? And are we in danger of history repeating itself? That’s what host Carolin Jackermeier discusses in the latest episode of our ECONtribute Wirtschaftspodcast with Thiemo Fetzer, ECONtribute Professor of Economics at the University of Bonn and the Univesity of Warwick. His research focuses on how crises arise and what their economic consequences are.
In the last few years, he has been following Brexit from a scientific perspective. We talk about how so many Britons became protest voters, what role the British government’s strict austerity policies played in this, and what we in Germany can learn from Brexit.

Invitation to the ReStart Talk with Christina Felfe
ReStart Talk "Im Spannungsfeld der Kulturen - Staatsbürgerschaft für in Deutschland geborene Kinder mit Migrationshintergrund" on 21st November 2023 with Christina Felfe, Chair of Applied Microeconomics at the University of Konstanz.
Since 01st January 2000, children born in Germany automatically receive German citizenship if their non-German parents live in Germany for a longer period of time.
What does this mean for the children? The researcher has examined various aspects - participation in education, social integration in the form of willingness to cooperate as well as cultural identity.
She comes to the conclusion that boys in particular benefit from citizenship, are more successful at school and are better integrated socially. Girls whose parents come from countries with traditional gender norms, however, suffer from the conflict of German culture and that of their parents, which is intensified by German citizenship. This has a negative impact on their well-being and integration.
ECONtribute places a special focus on gender equality issues with the ReStart lecture series. Several times a year, experts from the cluster and high-ranking guests give lectures that highlight various gender equality aspects and bring them closer to a broad audience from academia and the interested public.

Weitblick Cologne is looking for new members!
"Educational justice worldwide", that is the motto of Weitblick, a student initiative represented in Cologne and many other German cities. Within this framework, Weitblick implements a variety of projects on the topic of education. Internationally, we always work together with local partner organizations and, for example, together with the "Rising Winners Youth Empowerment Initiative" (RWYEI) in Kenya, we set up a project in which more than 200 girls from a total of 8 villages were equipped with menstrual products and informed about open questions on the subject of menstruation.
Students with Weitblick Köln have also been able to implement a wide variety of projects in Cologne. One example is "Stories with vision". In this project, students worked one-on-one with children from a 4th grade class to write stories, type them out and draw pictures, so that in the end great books with the children's stories were created. The goal of this project was to promote grammar and free and creative writing, among other things.
Do you also want to get involved and contribute with your own creative ideas? The tasks in a student initiative are versatile. Whether communication, social media, supervision of domestic and international projects or fundraising, with us you can contribute with your skills just as you like. You don't need any previous experience or special knowledge!
If you want to join us or just want to have a look at how the work of the association is done, feel free to come by. We meet every Tuesday at 19:30 in room S14 of the seminar building. Of course you can also bring friends who don't study at the university, everyone is welcome!
Otherwise, feel free to keep checking out our website and Instagram or email or sent us a message on Instagram.
We’re looking forward to meeting you!
