Climate Change and Society - Panel Discussion with Prof. Axel Ockenfels

The enrichment of the Earth's atmosphere with the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide is causing a global increase in the temperature of the water, land and air masses. The Earth's history has always known such temperature changes, but this time the increase is rapid. In just 80 years, the CO2 content in the atmosphere has risen from 300 to 420 parts per million (ppm) - a level not seen for 800,000 years. Climate change destroys the basis of life and leads to social tensions. In order to keep the climate bearable for nature and humans, enormous human, economic, technical and political measures are required.

In this panel discussion, Harald Lesch and Axel Ockenfels will seek answers to the question of how climate change can be managed in an economically responsible and politically acceptable way.

The discussion will take place with Prof. Dr. Harald Lesch (Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich) and Prof. Dr. Axel Ockenfels (Department of Economics, University of Cologne).

General conditions: Admission free, donation requested, maximum 30 seats in the hall, online unlimited.

In cooperation with the German Aerospace Center (Deutschen Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt e. V.)

Cologne students win Enactus National Cup 2023

Enactus Cologne was able to convince with the start-up idea Save the Grain at this year's National Cup and took first place out of 20 participating teams. Save the Grain supports farmers in sub-Saharan Africa in minimising crop losses and becoming financially independent. To this end, the team, consisting of 15 students from several Cologne universities, has developed a low-cost solar dryer that makes it possible to dry crops efficiently without electricity. Prototypes have already been installed in Togo, Guinea-Bissau and Senegal. To achieve its goal, Save the Grain also connects farmers to local training centres and supports the establishment of cooperatives. In addition, women are helped to set up their own businesses by using the Solar Dryer to produce and sell products such as tea, soap and spices.
By winning the National Cup, the Cologne-based team will represent Enactus Germany at the World Cup in Utrecht in October. From the more than 35 countries in which Enactus is represented, the respective national winners will come together and compete against each other for the World Champion.
The University of Cologne also received an award at the National Cup: David Stommel, a doctoral student at the WiSo Faculty, was named Faculty Advisor of the Year for his special commitment in supporting the Cologne team.
Enactus is a student initiative that promotes the realisation of the 17 sustainability goals. Enactus is active in 35 countries worldwide and is one of the largest global student organisations with over 37,000 students. In Cologne, the team currently consists of over 80 members who are working on six projects to create a more sustainable world.
