Double Master's Programme in European Studies: Data, Politics and Society

in cooperation with Maastricht University

Key Facts

Programme

The programme combines the study of European politics and society with advanced training in data analysis and research methods. Offered jointly by Maastricht University and the University of Cologne, the programme provides an interdisciplinary and international perspective on the challenges facing Europe. You will develop the skills to analyse political and societal developments using rigorous empirical methods and to apply data-driven approaches to current research and policy questions.

In this programme, you will:

  • Develop an in-depth understanding of European politics, institutions and societies
  • Receive advanced training in quantitative methods, data analysis and artificial intelligence (AI), and learn how to apply these methods to political and societal questions
  • Gain hands-on experience in designing and conducting research, analysing and visualising data, and communicating research findings to academic and non-academic audiences
  • Study in an international and interdisciplinary environment and gain practical experience through research seminars and policy simulations

Benefit from the expertise of two leading European universities and study a research-oriented programme that combines European Studies, Political Science and innovative data-driven approaches. As a Double Master’s Programme, it offers an international study experience and prepares you for careers in research, European and public institutions, think tanks, consulting and other policy-related fields. On successful completion of your studies, you will be awarded a master’s degree from both Maastricht University and the University of Cologne.

Courses

The courses offered by the two universities cover a wide range of topics and complement each other very well. The double degree is integrated into the regular master's programmes. It includes courses from both universities and is based on credit transfer. As part of the programme, you will write a master's thesis, which you will start developing in your first year and complete in your second year.

A more detailed programme will be published in November.

Career opportunities

The programme prepares you for positions where strong research, analytical and methodological skills are required. This includes careers in an international research environment as well as in public institutions, research and consulting organisations, non-governmental organisations and the private sector. Graduates are qualified for a variety of professional roles, including as policy advisors, researchers, analysts, consultants or in communication and public affairs. The programme’s focus on evidence-based policy analysis, advanced data analysis and AI-based methods provides students with the skills to address complex political and policy-related challenges. Graduates can pursue careers in EU and international institutions, ministries, think tanks, research institutes, consultancies or survey and market research organisations. The research-oriented nature of the programme also provides an excellent foundation for doctoral studies and academic or research-related careers.
