Changes in the application process due to coronavirus

Regular Master's Programmes including Double Master's Programmes

The new regulations apply on condition that your application is received by 15 July 2020 - for the Double Master's Programmes by 15 May or 30 April (uni-assist) - as shown in the figure below.

1. Admission tests

We accept the results of the online tests officially offered by the providers. The preliminary test results are sufficient. Please find further information on the following websites:

2. Language certificate for English

  • We accept English language certificates (with limited validity) that are max. 5 years old (including test results from 2015).
  • We accept the online tests TOEFL iBT® Special Home Edition and IELTS Indicator
  • TOEFL ITP® Plus for chinese applicants
  • The preliminary test results are sufficient.
  • Note for applicants with a foreign bachelor's degree: We have suspended the language test via uni-assist. Now you do not have to present a certified language certificate to uni-assist. Should uni-assist have evaluated you negatively due to a lack of language skills or the wrong form of the language certificate, your application will automatically be re-evaluated.

3. Language certificate for German

  • The preliminary test results are sufficient.
  • Note for applicants with a foreign bachelor's degree: We have suspended the language test via uni-assist. Now you do not have to present a certified language certificate to uni-assist. Should uni-assist have evaluated you negatively due to a lack of language skills or the wrong form of the language certificate, your application will automatically be re-evaluated.

4. Authenticated documents

No more certified documents need to be submitted with the application. It is sufficient if you upload non-certified documents. However, these must still be official, i.e. they must be printed out from the respective university. Self-made lists of courses or self-calculated grades will not be accepted. Furthermore, the documents must be written in German or English.

This regulation applies to applications via the Master's Application Portal of the University of Cologne as well as via uni-assist. For international applicants, there is no need to send certified copies by post to uni-assist; a pure online application is sufficient.

The certified documents or originals must be presented to the University of Cologne at the time of enrolment or at the latest six months later.

5.Transfer bachelor/ master

Applies only to students of the University of Cologne who are unable to complete their bachelor's degree due to the postponement of the date of the last exam.

Please inform the Student Application and Registration Office by e-mail (overview contact options) that you will remain enrolled in the corresponding bachelor's degree programme and that you will have to be enrolled for the corresponding master's degree programme at the University of Cologne at the same time, once you have been admitted.

6. Deadline

The application deadline for the WiSo Master's programmes is 15 June 2020. Please apply on time if you meet the admission requirements and have completed at least 80% of your bachelor's degree (see information on the application at each programme description).

Of all applicants who have submitted their complete application documents (including already evaluated uni-assist appplication) by 15 June 2020, particularly qualified students will receive a preliminary notification in July as a service that they will be offered a study place.

  • All applicants who have qualified for a preliminary notification have been contacted. You can view the result on our website. After the application deadline, the main procedure takes place in which all remaining places are allocated.
  • For applications received in full by 15 June 2020, an (improved) admission test result can be submitted subsequently until the application deadline. Please send the pdf-document (max.2 MB) by e-mail to the admissions office.

The legally binding letters of admission from the Student Application and Registration Office and International Office are expected to be sent out in early September. Based on the preliminary information you can already start planning your studies at the WiSo-Faculty.

Applicants who do not receive a message from the WiSo-Faculty in July will receive their letter of admission or rejection at the end of August.

Your documents are not complete by 15 June 2020?

If, due to Corona, you do not meet the admission requirements by 15 June 2020 and/or do not have the necessary documents and/or the result of the admission test and/or proof of language skills, there is a deadline for submission by 15 July 2020. This deadline does not have to be requested separately.

Furthermore, the deadline can be extended subject to the decision of the Ministry of Culture and Science (MKW) of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. We will inform you about changes to the additional submission deadline on this website.

 

Other regulations

Despite the current situation,  further regulations for  application for winter term 2020/21 will be maintained for the time being. We will inform you in due time if processes are adapted to uniform university procedures in coordination with the Prorectorate for Studies and Teaching of the University of Cologne.
