After a long and serious illness, Prof. Dr Andreß died on August 17, 2020, at the age of 67. Having worked in Cologne since 2003, he held the Chair of Empirical Social and Economic Research at the Institute for Sociology and Social Psychology (ISS) until his retirement.

His work, both in terms of content and methodology, has contributed significantly to the establishment of longitudinal research in sociology and its anchoring in teaching. In addition to his research achievements, Hans-Jürgen Andreß was signalised above all by his extremely successful commitment to the promotion of young academics, especially his persistent commitment to his students. Not least as head of the DFG Research Training Group "Social Order and Life Chances in Cross-National Comparison" (SOCLIFE), he made a significant contribution to the ISS' current leading position.

Even after his retirement, Prof. Dr Hans-Jürgen Andreß has remained closely associated with the WiSo Faculty in research. His much too early death leaves us deeply saddened, but many of us will remember above all enriching personal encounters and his characteristic humour. All our sympathy is with his family.
