Shaping the Energy Markets of the Future

A warm welcome to Jun. Prof. Dr Saber Talari!

Two people, Jun Prof Saber Talari and Professor Marita Jacob from the Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Cologne, shake hands and jointly hold a blue folder in front of a colorful painting on the occasion of Talari’s appointment as junior professor.

We are delighted to announce that Associate Professor Dr Saber Talari took up his post as Junior Professor of Smart Sustainable Energy Markets at the Department of Information Systems of the WiSo Faculty, University of Cologne, on 1 December. With Saber Talari, our faculty welcomes a dedicated researcher who has spent more than ten years developing innovative and sustainable solutions to the challenges of the energy transition.

Saber Talari has been a member of the WiSo Faculty since 2020. Before joining the WiSo Faculty, he worked at the Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Economics and Energy System Technology. After completing his PhD in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science on market mechanisms for demand-side management (2019, Universidade da Beira Interior in Portugal), he began his work as a postdoctoral researcher at Professor Wolf Ketter’s Chair of Information Systems for a Sustainable Society.

Through his previous position as the Team Lead of the Energy Division in the Department of Information Systems for a Sustainable Society, Dr Talari brings an impressive academic profile in both research and teaching, reflected in his numerous publications on the digital control of energy markets.

His remarkable scientific commitment is also evident in his role as scientific coordinator of the EU Horizon project to develop an intelligent peer-to-peer trading infrastructure for decentralised local energy distribution. In addition, he serves as Associate Editor of the professional journal IET Generation, Transmission and Distribution.

From December 2024 to April 2025, Saber Talari was a visiting faculty member at Johns Hopkins University, where he contributed to a joint research project on the future of electricity markets with 100% renewable energy and diverse flexibility resources, including hydrogen systems.

His dedication to teaching is also demonstrated by his course “Applied Mathematical Optimisation” for doctoral and master’s students, which has enriched our curriculum for many years.

We warmly welcome Associate Professor Dr Saber Talari to the WiSo Faculty. We look forward to continuing our collaboration!
