On 24 June 2026, the University of Cologne conferred its highest honour, the title of Honorary Senator, upon Ute Kahl, and the title of Honorary Senator upon WiSo alumnus Christoph Kahl.

Ute Kahl studied History and Social Sciences with a focus on teacher training at the University of Cologne and later worked alongside her husband at Jamestown L.P. Christoph Kahl studied Business Administration at the University of Cologne, specialising in banking, insurance and marketing. Early in his career, he focused on real estate investments in the United States for German investors. In 1983, he founded Jamestown L.P., headquartered in Atlanta, USA, where he served as Managing Partner until his retirement in December 2022. Both remain shareholders of the Jamestown Group.

Since the launch of the “Deutschlandstipendium” programme, Christoph and Ute Kahl have supported up to ten scholarship recipients each year, funding a total of 112 scholarships to date. In addition, they have been volunteering with the University of Cologne Foundation since 2017, where Christoph Kahl serves as Deputy Chairman of the Board. In this context, Professor Mukherjee highlighted their generous support for the construction of the InnoDom, which houses the University’s Gateway Excellence Start-up Center.

In his laudation, the Rector of the University of Cologne, Professor Dr Joybrato Mukherjee, emphasised: “Your strong connection to the University of Cologne, your shared alma mater, is reflected not only in your financial contributions but also in your societal commitment to fostering educational opportunities.”

In their words of thanks, the Honorary Senators made clear how important and formative education has been in their own lives, and that they regard giving back to society as both a responsibility and a matter of course. Through their engagement, they aim to support individual life paths regardless of discipline, strengthen social cohesion, and contribute to the infrastructural development of the University of Cologne. Currently, Ute and Christoph Kahl are supporting two new projects addressing the shortage of housing for international researchers and students in Cologne.
