A warm welcome to Jun.-Prof. Dr. Silke Johanndeiter!

We are delighted to announce that Assistant Professor Dr. Silke Johanndeiter took up her position as Junior Professor of Economics of Sustainable Energy at the Department of Economics of the WiSo Faculty, University of Cologne, on September 28, 2026. With Silke Johanndeiter, our faculty welcomes a dedicated scholar who has spent more than ten years working on a suitable regulatory framework for a decarbonized energy system.

After completing her Master's degree in Economics at the University of Mannheim in 2016, Silke Johanndeiter worked on the regulation of distribution grids at the EnBW-subsidiary Netze BW. Later, in EnBW's Energy Economics and Long-Term Assumptions unit, she was responsible for the company's contribution to an EU Horizon project on electricity market design for fully renewable energy systems. While she held this position, she completed her PhD in Economics at Ruhr University Bochum. After completing her PhD in 2024, she left industry. As postdoctoral researcher at Ruhr University Bochum, she led the Energy Market Design group at the Chair of Energy Systems and Energy Economics.

Dr. Silke Johanndeiter combines excellent training in economics with practical experience in the corporate implementation of energy policy and an interdisciplinary research environment. This combination resulted in a strong academic profile, reflected in numerous publications on energy market design. Her research focuses on price formation and risks in wholesale electricity markets with a high share of renewable energy, as well as on incentive effects and design of the corresponding support instruments.

Silke Johanndeiter is also a passionate educator. At Ruhr University Bochum, she taught the courses Demand and Supply in Energy Markets and Energiewirtschaft, along with the seminar Applied Energy System Analysis and Energy Economics. In February 2025, she also served as a visiting lecturer for Principles of Economics at the Protestant University of Rwanda. During her doctorate, she volunteered as course leader in a two-week sustainability academies run by JGW e.V., where she designed and taught courses on the future European energy system.

We warmly welcome Junior Professor Dr. Silke Johanndeiter to the WiSo Faculty, look forward to our continued collaboration, and wish her every success!
