As of 18 June 2025, Dr Sebastian Klüsener has been appointed Adjunct Professor (apl. Professor) at the Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences. The Key Research Initiative (KRI) on Demography & Social Inequality is particularly delighted to welcome him as a new member.

As Research Director at the Federal Institute for Population Research (BiB), he is an excellent addition to the KRI. With his extensive expertise and incisive research on current population dynamics, trends in mortality in Germany, and developments in working life expectancy in both Germany and globally—to name just a few—he offers valuable insights into crucial societal challenges.

Dr Klüsener studied Geography with minors in Economics and Public Law at Heidelberg University. He went on to complete his doctorate in Human Geography (Dr. rer. nat.) at the University of Freiburg in 2006. His academic journey then took him to Rostock, where he initially worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research, continuing there as a research scientist until 2018.

Since 2018, he has served as Research Director at the Federal Institute for Population Research (BiB), where he leads the Department of “Ageing, Mortality and Population Dynamics,” managing a team of around 20 researchers.

Now, he will also contribute his expertise to the Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences and the Key Research Initiative on Demography & Social Inequality, further advancing research excellence in this vital area.

Once again, a very warm welcome to the Faculty apl. Professor Dr Sebastian Klüsener!
