Honours and prizes in 2018
- Prof. Dr. Detlef Buschfeld, Director of the Research Institute for Vocational Training in the Craft Trades , was appointed by the President of the German Bundestag, Wolfgang Schäuble, as a member of the Enquete Commission "Vocational Education and Training in the Digital World of Work".
- Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Proksch, a team of five students from the University of Cologne won the debating competition "NRW debattiert Europa".
- According to a recent WirtschaftsWoche ranking, Prof. Jan Recker is the most successful business economist under the age of 40 in German-speaking countries.
- Prof. Dr. Christoph Rosenkranz took 4th place in the WirtschaftsWochen ranking of the most successful researchers under 40 in German-speaking countries.
- Prof. Dr. Völckner received the "Female career award" of HEC Lausanne and presented a research project on brand positioning at the award ceremony. Launched by the Equal Opportunity Committee of HEC Lausanne, the award honors a female academic career outside HEC Lausanne.

- Anna-Kristina Kerkhof received the “Junior Teaching Award of the WiSo Faculty” for the Bachelor course „Medienordnung“ in the summer semester 2017.
- Samuel Stäbler received the “Junior Teaching Award of the WiSo Faculty” for the Master seminar „Management Skills“ in the summer semester 2017.
- Dr. Hendrik Wilhelm received the “Junior Teaching Award of the WiSo Faculty” for the Bachelor course „Organisationsgestaltung“ in the summer semester 2017.

- Prof. Dr. Carlos Alós-Ferrer made the 20th place in the "Handelsblatt Ranking VWL 2017" in the category "Current research performance in the last 5 years".
- Prof. Dr. Felix Bierbrauer won the "Prix Edmond Malinvaud" award for his paper „Efficiency, Welfare and Political Competition“, in cooperation with Pierre Boye.
- Dr. Max Backhaus, Department of General Business Administration, Marketing and Market Research, was awarded the Schmalenbach-Preis in September 2017 for his dissertation „Econometric Essays on Protecting, Growing, and Benefiting from Costumer-Based Brand Equity”
- Dr. Karina Copil received the 11th Werner Kern Prize for Production Economics Research for 2015 and 2016 for her dissertation "Capacitated Lot-Sizing and Scheduling with Scarce Setup Resources" at the Seminar for Supply Chain Management and Production.
- Christian Czymara and Alexander Schmidt-Catran won the price of the Fritz Thyssen Stiftung for social science essays for their article „Wer ist in Deutschland willkommen? Eine Vignettenanalyse zur Akzeptanz von Einwanderern“ published in KZfSS . Furthermore, Mr. Czymara got an honorable mention for the Early Career Award of ESRA and the "Best Paper Award" of the 04. Annual BAGSS Conference 2017.
- Prof. Dr. Werner Delfmann, outgoing president of the scientific advisory board of the "Bundesvereinigung Logistik" (BVL), was honored with a lifetime membership in May 2017.
- Dr. Alexander Edeling und Prof. Dr. Marc Fischer, Department of General Business Administration, Marketing and Market Research, were finalists for the Paul E. Green Award 2017 for their article “Marketing’s Impact on Firm Value: Generalizations from a Meta-Analysis“, that was published 2016 in the Journal of Marketing Research.
- Dr. Alexander Edeling, Department of General Business Administration, Marketing and Market Research, received the "IMU Research for Practice Award" of the Institute for Market-oriented Management of the University of Mannheim for his dissertation „Essays on Strategic Marketing Behavior and Its Financial Performance Implications“. In addition, he received the Horizon Foundation Award 2017 for his dissertation and was awarded third place in the EMAC/Sheth Foundation Doctoral Dissertation Competition 2017 for his dissertation.
- Prof. Dr. Oliver Gürtler is on the 14th place in the "Handelsblatt Ranking VWL 2017" in the category "Researchers under 40 (total research achievement)".
- Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Ketter, Department of Information Systems for Sustainable Society, received the European Energy Exchange Excellence PhD Thesis Award, Advisor to Micha Kahlen, 3000 Euro Prize Money, Brussels, Belgium. Wolfgang Ketter also received the European Information Systems Research Paper of the Year 2017 Award, Runner-up, CIO CITY and the Association for Information Systems, Amsterdam, Netherlands. As Advisor to Angelos Tsereklas-Zafeirakis, the KPMG-RSM Sustainability Master Thesis Award was received, 1000 Euro Prize Money, Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
- Dr. Hanno Kruse was awarded with the „Nachwuchspreis der DGS-Sektion für soziologische Netzwerkforschung“ (together with Sanne Smith of the Stanford University and Frank van Tubergen and Ineke Maas of the University of Utrecht).
- Prof. Dr. Axel Ockenfels has been appointed as Member of the National Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech) in 2017. He was ranked 48th in the "Handelsblatt Ranking VWL 2017" in the category "Current research performance over the last 5 years". In addition, Prof. Ockenfels is appointed spokesman of the ceres thematic focus "Health and Society in the Digital Age" and member of the scientific advisory board of the "Karlsruhe Decision and Design Lab" (KD2Lab).
- "Tandem Fellowship" for Prof. Dr. Matthias Pilz: The Stifterverband has selected the project proposal "Integrating basic economic understanding into non-economic courses of study - an example of case-based higher education for prospective biologists" by Prof. Dr. Matthias Pilz and Prof. Dr. Jutta Papenbrock from the University of Hanover as one of two nationally funded tandem applications.
- Prof. Werner Reinarzt, PhD ranked 19th in terms of research impact by the German daily newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in their yearly ranking of Germany’s most influencing economists [Deutschlands einflussreichste Ökonomen, Kategorie Forschung/Forschungszitate].
- Prof. Werner Reinartz' Artikel „Creating Enduring Customer Value“ together with V. Kumar is one of the finalists for the 2017 Shelby D. Hunt / Harold H. Maynard Award. The award recognizes the best article in the Journal of Marketing for its significant contribution to marketing theory and thought.
- Prof. Dr. Merlin Schaeffer won the "Distinguished Contribution to Scholarship in Population Award 2017” of the "Section on Sociology of Population" of the American Sociological Association in cooperation with Joscha Legewie (Yale University). He was also awarded the prize of the DGS section „Modellbildung & Simulation“ which is given every two years, the "Anatol-Rapoport-Preis", for the year 2016.
- Prof. Dr. Patrick Schmitz made the 22nd place in the "Handelsblatt Ranking VWL 2017" in the category "Current research performance in the last 5 years". In addition, he is awarded 34th place in the category "Lifetime achievement (total research achievement)".
- Prof. Dr. Detlef Schoder, Department of Information Systems and Information Management, was awarded the "Lehrbuchpreis 2017" by Kenneth C. Laudon, Jane Laudon and Detlef Schoder of the German Association of Teachers of Business Administration (VHB) for the innovative book "Wirtschaftsinformatik - Eine Einführung".
- Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Detlef Schoder, the cooperation project "Man-Machine Symbiosis" of the Cologne Information Systems experts with Jettainer GmbH - a subsidiary of Lufthansa Cargo AG - was also named finalist of the Innovation Award of German Aviation (IDL 2017)
in the category "Emission reduction". The project also reached the final round of the German Innovation Award 2017. - Prof. Dr. Matthias Sutter was ranked 7th in the "Handelsblatt Ranking VWL 2017" in the category "Current research performance in the last 5 years". Also in the category "Life's work (total research achievement)" he made the 31st place.
- Prof. Dr. Dominik Wied was ranked 57th place in the "Handelsblatt Ranking VWL 2017" in the category "Researchers under 40 (total research achievement)".

- Jun.-Prof. Dr. Anna-Lena Sachs received the “Junior Teaching Award of the WiSo Faculty” for the Bachelor course „Operations Research“ in the fall semester 2016/17.
- AR Dr. Florian Sonnenburg received the “Junior Teaching Award of the WiSo Faculty” for the Bachelor course „Investition und Finanzierung“ in the fall semester 2016/17.
- Jun.-Prof. Dr. Sabine Wende received the “Junior Teaching Award of the WiSo Faculty” for the Master course „Corporate Risk Management“ in the fall semester 2016/17.

- Jun.-Prof. Dr. Matthias Heinz, Seminar for Business Administration and Human Resources Management, was awarded the „Joachim Herz Wirtschaftspreis“
- Dr. Felix Kölle, Economics: Design and Behavior, received the „Modigliani Research Grant“ for young researchers from „UniCredit & Universities“.
- Prof. Dr. Clemens Kroneberg, Institute of Sociology and Social Psychology (ISS), received an „ERC-Starting-Grant“.
- Dr. Philipp Lersch, Institute of Sociology and Social Psychology (ISS), was awarded funding for a young researcher group applied for under the „Emmy Noether programme“
- Prof. Dr. Claudia Loebbecke, MBA., Business, Media and Technology Management, was elected as a substitute member (not representing an association) of the „12th WDR Broadcasting Council“, has been an „Honorary Lifetime Member of the Association for Information Systems (AIS)“ since 2016, was appointed as a member of the „Wissenschaftlichen Arbeitskreises für Regulierungsfragen“ of the German Federal Network Agency and was in charge of the „Socio-Economic Sciences & Humanities Division“ as a member of the „Academic Council of the European Academy of Sciences“.
- Prof. Dr. Karl Mosler, Institute for Statistics and Econometrics, was awarded honorary membership of the „German Statistical Society“.
- Prof. Dr. Axel Ockenfels, Department of Economics, was made a member of the „European Academy of Sciences“, placed 151 in the „Global Thought Leader Index“ (2016 ranking list) and 9 in the „F.A.Z.-Ökonomen Ranking-Deutschlands einflussreichste Ökonomen“. He also received the „Albertus-Magnus-Preis“. for the 2015/16 fall term.
- Prof. Dr. Merlin Schaeffer won the "Anatol-Rapoport-Award" in the Section "Modelling and Simulation" of the German Society for Sociology, in cooperation with Celine Teney (University of Bremen) and Jutta Höhne (Hans-Böckler-Stiftung)
- Dr. Alexander Schmidt-Catran, Institute of Sociology and Social Psychology (ISS), and PD Dr. Dennis C. Spies, Cologne Center for Comparative Politics, received the „Allbus-Preis 2016“ from the Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences (GESIS) for their article on „Immigration and Welfare Support in Germany“, which was published in the American Sociological Review. In addition, he won the highest award of the Fritz Thyssen Foundation for sociological essays, in cooperation with Christian Czymara (PhD student at CGS).
- Prof. Dr. Detlef Schoder, Department of Information Systems and Information Management, was awarded second place in the „Deutschen Logistikpreises“, along with Daniel Döppner, Honorata Siejka and Wolfgang Hennes and industry partner “Jettainer GmbH (Lufthansa Cargo)”.
- Michael Schwan, Cologne Center for Comparative Politics, received the Council for European Studies award for the "Beste Forschungspapier eines Nachwuchswissenschaftlers 2016" .
- Prof. Dr. Fabian J. Sting, Department of Supply Chain Management - Strategy and Innovation, was honoured with the „ERIM Top Article Award“.
- Prof. Dr. Matthias Sutter, Economics: Design and Behavior, received the „Pater Johannes Schasching Preis“and ranked 22nd in the „F.A.Z.-Ökonomen Ranking-Deutschlands einflussreichste Ökonomen“.
- Sebastian Tonke, Department of Economics, received the „Junior Scholar Award“.
- Prof. Dr. Christine Trampusch, Cologne Center for Comparative Politics, was elected as a council member of the "Skill Mismatch: Measurement Issues and Consequences for Innovative and Inclusive Societies" project at the University of Turin (Italy) and as co-editor of the"European Journal of Political Research" ernannt.
- Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Wessels, Centre for Turkey and European Union Studies (CETEUS), received the Prague European Summit „Vision for Europe-Award“ . In addition, the European Commission awarded him the „Jean Monnet Chair for Turkey and European Union Studies (MONTEUS)“ and he was appointed„Honorary Member of the Trans European Policy Studies Association (TEPSA) Board“.
- Dr. Conrad Ziller, Institute of Sociology and Social Psychology (ISS), received the Körber Stiftung’s „Deutschen Studienpreis (2nd prize)“ and the „Nachwuchspreis der Arbeitsgemeinschaft Sozialwissenschaftlicher Institute e.V. (ASI)“.

- Jun.-Prof. Dr. Julia Nasev, Department of Accounting, received the “Junior Teaching Award of the WiSo Faculty” in the 2016 spring term for the course on "Empirical Accounting Research Design".
- Prof. Dr. Axel Ockenfels, Department of Economics, received the “Albertus-Magnus-Preis” for the 2015/16 fall term.
- Dr. Irene Somm, Institute for Profession, Economy and Social Pedagogy, received the “Junior Teaching Award of the WiSo Faculty” in the SS 2016 for the course on “Gruppendiskussionsverfahren in der Ungleichheitsforschung”.
- Dr. Florian Sonnenburg, Department of General Business Management and Finance, won the "Junior Teaching Award of the WiSo Faculty" in the category "Bachelor course with more than 70 participants" for his teaching course "Investion and financing" in 2016/17 winter term.
- Prof. Dr. Ulrich Thonemann, Department of Supply Chain Management and Management Science, received the “Albertus Magnus Teaching Award” for the 2016 spring term.
