Invitation to the Panel Discussion on 18 February: Sociological Ash Wednesday on “University Discourse Spaces Between Freedom and Restriction”

Dear students,

On 18 February, the University of Cologne will host the Sociological Ash Wednesday for the second time. This year’s event focuses on the question of how to appropriately deal with academic freedom and diversity of viewpoints at universities and in academic research.

The panel discussion will feature Claudia Diehl (Konstanz), Naika Foroutan (Berlin), Markus Ogorek (Cologne), Uwe Schimank (Bremen), and Richard Traunmüller (Mannheim). The discussion will be moderated by Jan-Martin Wiarda.

Organised jointly with the Adenauer School of Government, the panel discussion takes place as part of the 125th anniversary of the Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences. The Sociological Ash Wednesday is conceived as a forum for open and controversial debate. It aims to be insightful, stimulating and engaging, and is addressed in particular to students as well as to the interested public.

Further information and the opportunity to obtain one of the free tickets via Eventbrite can be found at the following link:
https://www.eventbrite.de/e/soziologischer-aschermittwoch-tickets-1980355625987

One point of reference for the panel discussion is a recent German study published in PNAS on “Students’ motives for restricting academic freedom”:

Please feel free to forward this invitation to anyone who may be interested.

How fair is the pension package?

How sensible is the German government'spension package from an economic perspective? Will the younger generation also benefit from it? And what reforms can we expect from the pension commission?

Christian Bayer, professor of macroeconomics at ECONtribute at the University of Bonn, conducts research on fiscal policy and inequality. We talk about how the German government's pension package can be evaluated from an economic perspective, whether it distributes the burdens unevenly, and whether the pension system can still be reformed at this point.

This episode is about rhetoric, retirement, and reforms.
