Invitation to the WiSo 125 Years Lecture Series 2026

Topic: Democracy and the Challenge of Governing for the Future

We are pleased to continue our lecture series with Prof. Dr. Michael Bechtel, Professor of Political Economy and Director of the Department of Political Science at the University of Cologne. He is also a member of the Excellence Cluster ECONtribute, where he focuses on the intersection of politics and economics.

Prof. Bechtel's research delves into critical questions concerning how democracies can effectively address long-term challenges, such as climate change, economic inequality, and technological transformation. His work examines the complexities of policy-making in democratic systems and explores innovative strategies for ensuring that policies are not only responsive to present needs but also considerate of future generations.

In his talk, Prof. Bechtel will highlight these pressing issues and discuss the difficulties involved in shaping sustainable governance that benefits both current and future citizens.

Doors will open at 5:45 PM, and the lecture will begin at 6:00 PM in Lecture Hall I. Following the presentation, you are warmly invited to join us for a reception, providing an excellent opportunity for further discussions and networking.

Reminder: Secondary Selection Round for STAP Term Abroad in Spring 2027

Students who would like to gain international academic experience can still apply for a term abroad until mid-June as part of our STAP secondary selection round. Applications are possible for all applicant groups until 15 June via the WEX database.

Invitation | Opening of the Adenauer School of Government on July 13, 2026

Dear Colleagues,

We cordially invite you to the opening of the Adenauer School of Government (ASG) on July 13, 2026, at the University of Cologne. Please note that the event will be conducted in German.

The Adenauer School of Government is being established as an internationally oriented institution dedicated to educating leaders in the public sector. Made possible by substantial, long-term funding from the Alfred Landecker Foundation, it is dedicated to excellent multidisciplinary governance research and teaching for a data- and technology-rich world.

We are very pleased to welcome Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz to the opening event. Afterward, we cordially invite you to join us in the foyer to toast this festive occasion.

Career Tuesday – Workshop with MLP: Salary Negotiations – July 9, 2026

Would you like to learn how to realistically assess your personal market value and navigate salary negotiations with confidence? In the practice-oriented MLP workshop “Salary Negotiations,” you will gain the essential knowledge needed to negotiate strategically and effectively.

You will learn which factors truly matter in salary negotiations and why simply stating a salary range is not enough. The workshop focuses on the entire negotiation process – from the first contact with your potential employer to the structured presentation of your individual value, as well as proven strategic approaches such as phased (step-by-step) negotiation.

All topics are explored through concrete examples and reinforced with practical exercises. The goal of the workshop is to prepare you specifically for salary discussions and to strengthen your negotiation skills.

Career Prospects in Economics – Alumni Talk – Tuesday, June 9 | 6:00–7:30 p.m.

Do you need any inspiration about where studying economics can actually lead you in your career? At Career Tuesday “Career Prospects Economics,” you'll get first-hand answers: alumni will talk about how they started their careers, what challenges they overcame, and what paths opened up for them.

Not only will you gain exciting insights, but you will also receive practical tips for your own internship or job plans and the chance to talk directly to alumni and expand your network.

Our guests:

Daniel Meyer: Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Economics from the University of Cologne, with a focus on monetary policy and the energy sector; began his career at KfW DEG and currently works at JUWI GmbH in the financing of renewable energy projects.

Theresa Markefke: Master's in Economics at the University of Cologne, worked at the IZA Institute for Labor Economics; since 2024, consultant at the Federal Network Agency in the field of telecommunications regulation.

Crack the Case Workshop mit Prof. Roll & Pastuch!

Are you interested in pricing, sales, and strategy, and would you like to get to know a Cologne-based consulting firm? Then the Crack the Case Workshop with Prof. Roll & Pastuch is the right opportunity for you.

Prof. Roll & Pastuch is an award-winning consulting firm with offices in Cologne, Berlin, Munich, Osnabrück, and Zurich. They support companies in sustainably strengthening their market and competitive position, from developing effective pricing strategies to successfully implementing them in sales. 

On June 9, from 4:30 PM to 8:00 PM, Prof. Roll & Pastuch will welcome us to their Cologne office for an interactive evening focused on Value Pricing. 

After a short company presentation and an introduction to selected pricing fundamentals, you will work on a practical case study in small groups together with other students. Following the presentation of your results, you will receive valuable tips on how to approach case studies, and there will also be a small prize to win. 

No advanced pricing knowledge is required for the workshop. As preparation, you are welcome to take a look at the Prof. Roll & Pastuch Pricing Lexicon, but this is not mandatory. 

Catering will be provided during the event. 

Please note that participation is limited to 12 students. A waiting list will be available.

Free DAF German Courses (A2–C1) for winter semester 2026/27

Dear international Master’s students,

The WiSo Faculty will cover the course fees for a limited number of enrolled Master’s students who wish to attend DAF German language courses (levels A2–C1) in the Winter Semester 2026/27. Places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. 

To participate, students must complete a free placement test, which will take place either from 15–21 June 2026 or from 14–20 August 2026. Course placement will be based on the test results and available places. More information can be found here: Universität zu Köln: Department German as a Foreign Language

Please note: The fee waiver is subject to a minimum attendance rate of 70%. If a student withdraws after the course has started, the faculty reserves the right to reclaim the course fees of 250€.
